DAY 5 – SYLVIA

April 6, 2019

The prompt given by the official NaPoWriMo site: a poem that incorporates at least one of the following: (1) the villanelle form (2) lines taken from an outside text (3) phrases that oppose each other in some form.

Okay, so here, I have (1) completed and touched on (2) as well – especially in the first few stanzas. So, yup, this is my first attempt at a villanelle…

SYLVIA

.

Wilderness of wisdom slowly augments wood by wood

Where Sylvia’s merry strains echoed in days of youth

Now a silence brooding lingers in her deepened hood

In her charming days of youth, goddess of love’s rival she stood

And blinded by her vanity fair, indulged in myriad acts uncouth

But wilderness of wisdom slowly augments wood by wood.

Haughty were her words that fell when kindled to a feud,

But soothing were the songs she sang in ailing creatures’ ruth

But now a silence brooding lingers in her deepened hood.

Dark tempests then gathered in her brink of womanhood

Violent waves of tribulations tempered her to truth.

For wilderness of wisdom slowly augments wood by wood.

When at last her tempests stilled, Sylvia understood

The mines that lay within her and the world around, forsooth

And now a silence brooding lingers in her deepened hood.

All that lay in pits of past the waves had washed away

In passing tides of time her hardened heart well-sculpted lay.

For wilderness of wisdom slowly augments wood by wood.

And now a silence brooding lingers in her deepened hood.
